   The number of free proton clubs corresponds to the (main) oxidation number.

   Au has one free proton club

   Hg has two free proton clubs

    Note: Some of  the peripheral protons (deuterons) of Hg shown in the left view section of Fig. 8 are not in one and a same "plane" but rotated in 45 deg. This is apparent from the right view. 

   It is apparent that despite their neighboring positions in the Periodic table Au and Hg atoms are quite different.
